The Book of Thomas by Robert Boyczuk

The Book of Thomas by Robert Boyczuk is the first 5 star review I have given in over a year. But let me back up for a moment. This novel is published by ChiZine which for a long time was my favorite publisher, but then, like so many things in life, e-books and such took over everything and I stopped receiving their novels. This was about seven years ago. Somehow through the seven moves I have made since then, this book has not only stayed with me, but remained forgotten. As I searched for my next novel, I was surprised to find this forgotten ChiZine book and grabbed it hoping it would be as good as the rest of them.

Genre:  Fantasy

Publisher: ChiZine Publications

Released:  2012

Stars:  5 Stars

Reviewer: Michael D. Griffiths

It proved better than most and I became hooked by the narrative at once. Have you ever read a book you did not wish to finish but you read it super-fast anyway? This is one of those.

The novel centers around Thomas who is a young pious boy who has just entered puberty. The story follows him as he goes from being an abused orphan to learning more about the holy church then he would have thought possible. His world is made up of lawfully organized spheres controlled by the clergy much as they rule everything else. The religion itself is based on ancient Christian myths and such things as a sun circling a flat earth and talking angels are normal here.

Despite Thomas’ age and build, he proves himself able to help more than hinder as he heads deeper into clandestine plots and dangers. His allies and advisers grow thin as the novel progresses and more than his faith is tested when he is asked to break into the sphere of the angels.

The only downside I can see with this novel is it does explore young sexuality, so if this might upset you, I would look elsewhere for your entertainment.

I found this novel fresh and original. If it lets you know anything, I ordered the second book online which is something I have not done for at least five years.
